Today we finally had our mechanical walk through of our house! This means that the electrical and plumbing (and of course the walls, floors and roof) are "finished". Well.... not quite. In our walk through we found a few things missing (wires with no outlet boxes), but only two real mistakes. One is easy - they have an ugly front door on the place, definitely not the one I chose, easy to replace. The second requires more work. As Jeff is really looking forward to having a workshop in the basement, we are both keen to improve the ventilation. With the possibility of a fourth (!) bathroom to be roughed in down there, we decided to ask them to skip the tub and toilet, but to put in the vent fan and sink hook-up. This way we will get a laundry sink and next to it a place where we can install a hood fan over a table, venting to the outdoors. Well, they forgot to do this eventhough we filled out all the right forms. It looks like they will have to cut a hole in the side of the foundation to accommodate it - and that sounds hard to do... I'm excited to think that all these things will be under warranty.
People have told me this, but WOW! - my perceptions have really changed now that we walked through the space. It's huge! Well, it's bigger than a cheap 1 bedroom apartment, that's for sure. The whole process has seemed a bit abstract, but now that we walked around it, ran up and down the stairs a few times, and had our first real conversation with a guy in a hard hat, I'll admit - I'm Excited!
Now we are waiting on the drywall installers. Along with the boom in housing in Calgary there is the inevitable labour shortage, and we are waiting for our closing date notice expected as soon as the drywall is up. Fingers are crossed for early March. I'm going to feel so bourgeois - owning a house... imagine!

Congrats on the walk-through! I'm enjoying watching it evolve - take pics inside next time!
Sorry to be the voice of temperance (this is, after all, the role of your older relatives!), but the spaciousness will disappear when the drywall goes up. It's hard to believe how those thin sheets make so much difference to the spatial perspective! Nevertheless, it sounds like a really great house -- we're really excited for you!
Hey Zoe - don't forget to ask Jeff about the range hood/fan that we have. We took it out when we installed the new microwave. Might work really well above the parts washer.
Interesting comment about the drywall taking up space. IMHO I don't think it will make much of a difference. Especially when they get the color onto it. No matter what, it's going to seem super-awesome and big after your apartment. It's great what a second floor and a basement can do for privacy when you need some time by yourself!
Hi Zoe,
Happy New Year! The place looks great in the previous post's picture. You must be excited. Hope to see you in .be sometime this summer.
So, I was thinking to myself, "haven't heard from Zoe for a while." Then I thought, Check the blog. Sure enough: News! All sounds great. To all readers, I confirm: The Christmas family trip was full of wonderful food and good times. I did not mind the couch at all - really. A lovely place, Alberta! Too bad about the politics.
